Summary
Technology-related tensions include
degree to which professionals utilize formal or rigorous methods
degree to which practice highlights needs for communication and team skills, as well as technical background
degree to which citizens understand limitations of technology
access to [Web-based] materials versus analysis of those sources
degree to which technical people can or should specialize in a narrow area,
degree to which short-term needs overwhelm long-term gains
Institutions must consider the extent they will prepare students to address these tensions.
UNITEC (and SIGCSE) may be in a special position to help bridge gaps
between industry and academia
among professionals
between the technical community and the general public
Contributions require
broad view of needs of audience (students, educators)
support for technical dimensions of work
awareness of other vital dimensions
conscious efforts and programs to widen perspectives and integrate ideas
