Science Building Phases 2 and 3 Transition Details May, 2006 - December 2006 Notes by Henry Walker Draft: April 28, 2006 The purpose of these notes is to clarify transition details, focusing primarily on Summer 2006. The notes are organized by department, since approaches vary according to what part of the existing building is considered. It is expected that these notes will be reviewed by Weitz Construction, by each department, and by Facilities Management. Status notes will be adjusted as each group confirms this plan is acceptable. Biology Status: Reviewed, accepted by Weitz Northwest corridor: Rooms 1003, 1601, 1602, Growth Chambers Overview: This area must be renovated in early summer 2006, to allow removal of the existing stairway and construction of new corridors for fire exit for Phase 2. Approach: A temporary wall will be constructed from the existing windows, along the middle of the corridor, ending after room 1003. Doors in the wall will allow access to the growth chambers. Growth chambers will need to be moved out from the current wall a few feet to allow access and refinishing of walls behind. The growth chambers will be fully accessible and serviceable for the 2006-2007 academic year. Timing: Temporary wall and renovation of this area is scheduled for May 12, 2006 - May, 2007. Understanding: Room 1003 itself will not be renovated until January 2007, so materials can be left in room 1003 to support labs through summer and fall, 2006. Room 1003 will have to be cleared for January 2007. Northern labs: Rooms 1007, 1104 Overview: A main ventilation shaft will be constructed just north of these existing labs. Approach: The windows along the northern wall will be covered with plywood for protection and to seal labs from construction dust. Weitz will work from the north (phase 2 side) to remove windows and construct needed walls. During Phase 3A, the inside of the window area will get new drywall and paint. Timing: Windows will be covered June/July 2006. Drywall and paint will be added to window areas in Summer 2007. Eastern labs: Labs 1103, 1105, and 1109 Overview: The east wall of these areas will be renovated in Phase 3A, Summer 2007 Approach: The new corridor (west of the new courtyard) will be blocked at both ends to provide access. During renovation itself, rooms along the corridor will not be useable, since counter tops will need to be cleared. Timing: Corridor east of these rooms will not be usable during Phase 3A, Summer 2007, but will be available for Fall 2007 classes. Similarly, rooms along this corridor will not be available for Summer 2007. (The rooms will be available for normal use through Spring, 2007.) Chemistry Status: Reviewed, accepted by Weitz Northwestern Corridor: Room 2005 Overview: The northwestern stairway and adjacent glove box room must be renovated in Summer 2006, to provide a framework for later work. Approach: A temporary wall will be built down the northwest corridor, starting at the glass window at the north or the corridor and extending past the entrance to the current glove box room. An exit scaffold will be added to the north, to allow emergency exit. Timing: The temporary wall and renovation of this area is scheduled for May 20, 2006, - May, 2007. The glove box must be relocated for this work to occur. Understanding: Research lab room 2008 will not be directly impacted. Some noise is anticipated during summer 2006, but it is anticipated that work can continue in room 2008 during summer 2006. Status: Reviewed, accepted by Weitz Reviewed, accepted by Chemistry Department Northern and Eastern labs: Rooms 2101, 2102, and the 2100 corridor Overview: Lab areas in rooms 2101 and 2102 will be renovated in Phase 3A (Summer 2007). Opening at current fire exit must be reconfigured. However, work outside, in the Phase 2 area, will be loud during Summer 2006, so work in these areas is not advised. Approach: A temporary wall can be constructed near the current fire exit; the rest of this lab would be usable, if necessary. Timing: Building of temporary wall in room 2102: open Fire exit in room 2102 will not be usable for summer 2006; rest of room 2102 will be available for summer 2006, BUT noise north of rooms 2101 and 2102 may make work in these rooms difficult. The stockroom and other rooms along the 2100 corridor will remain open during summer 2006. Chemistry majors may move from 2101 to another room for summer 2006 to avoid noise and disruption. Summer 2007: renovation will involve 2101, 2102, the stockroom and numerous other rooms along the 2100 corridor. The stockroom will likely move to a new lab (with a hood) in the Phase 2 construction for Summer 2007. This area will be completed for fall, 2007. Mathematics and Computer Science Status: Reviewed, accepted by Weitz Overview: Windows must be renovated; a corridor cut in the north wall classrooms, restrooms, and custodial closet, and a corridor opening must be cut into the north wall of room 2424. Approach: Windows and affected wall areas for corridors will be covered with plywood and sealed. Weitz will work from the north (phase 2 side) to remove windows, fill areas will brick, and cut corridor openings. Temporary plastic sheeting will be installed in room 2424 for the cutting of the new corridor opening; the plastic will be replaced by a temporary wall, after the opening is completed. Timing: North-facing windows will be covered with plywood in the second half of June 2006. This will require 1-2 hours per window. The corridor opening in room 2424 will be cut in second half of June 2006, and room 2424 may be unavailable during the second half of June 2006. Physics Status: Reviewed, accepted by Weitz Overview: A corridor opening must be cut through the concrete wall in the basement, near the stairway, across from room 0235. Approach: A temporary wall will be constructed about 18" from the outside wall, near the basement doorway between physics and psychology. The corridor between physics and psychology will remain open, but there will be considerable noise when the opening is cut. Timing: Preparation of the temporary wall will take place during the last week of May 2006, cutting the opening is scheduled for the first week of June 2006. Other physic spaces are not directly affected through the summer and fall, 2006. NOTE: Weitz should be aware of possible asbestos and being sure nothing floats in the hallway or harms the workers. Psychology Status: Reviewed, accepted by Weitz Ground floor: Office (room 0430) and adjacent lab area (room 0428) Overview: A corridor opening must be cut in the concrete wall in preparation for future phases. Approach: A temporary wall will be constructed in office (room 0430) and in the adjacent lab to contain dust and mess. The wall will intrude about 18" into existing spaces. Timing: Room 0430 Office occupant will clear areas near wall by end of exam week, May 2006 (to allow file cabinet and wall unit to be moved) Weitz to move furniture and remove white board and clock shortly after graduation Weitz to remove about 1 width of concrete blocks from the east wall. Weitz to build temporary wall (18" from concrete) from east wall to near moveable partition during the week after graduation Weitz to mount white board on temporary wall Temporary wall is to be insulated, to help maintain temperature in room and to help block construction noise. Outside of temporary wall also is to be taped and painted, so Office can continue in use through the coming academic year. Weitz to cut opening in last week of May and first week in June 2006 Room 0428: Scheduled for last week of May and first week of June. Weitz will remove northern wall unit (perhaps both wall units) from west wall. These will be placed on the floor in the room, so they can continue to be used. Weitz will move the floor cabinet out from the northern wall and rotate it to rest against the west wall. Temporary wall is to be installed in northwestern corner of this room, prior to concrete cutting. Temporary wall is to be insulated, to help maintain temperature in room and to help block construction noise from entering lab and adjacent rooms.   Issues: What happens to the clock now in the office (room 0430) First floor: Office (room 1434) and the labs along north wall Overview: Windows must be renovated in the north wall classrooms. A corridor opening must be cut in the north wall of room 1424A Approach: Windows and affected wall areas for corridors will be covered with plywood and sealed. Weitz will work from the north (phase 2 side) to remove windows, fill areas will brick, and cut corridor openings. A temporary wall will be constructed 18" from the north wall of room 1424A, as a protection for work on the windows and corridor opening. Timing: Windows will be covered with plywood in June 2006 Each window will require 1-2 hours work. Construction of the temporary wall will take place in June 2006. Issues: Files, tables, shelves will need to be moved away from wall temporarily to provide access to window areas. Some dust may be created during the installation of window coverings. Science Learning Center Status: Draft Work is not anticipated for the Science Learning Center office (room 2002). However, much noisy work continues just outside. Period noise outside the office interferes with tutoring. Tutoring could move to other parts of the building (e.g., the Science elbow), if a sufficiently powerful laptop were available to run needed software with reasonable performance. Stairway between Physics/Chemistry and Psychology/Mathematics/Computer Science Status: Draft Overview: The window in the stairway must be boarded up, and a temporary wall must be constructed to cover the window near the elevator. Timing: This work is planned for June 2006
