Twist
2006
Peter Simpson
Colored ink on wood fiber

In general, I avoid creating art in reaction to the news of the day, but I was deeply affected by the recent tornado that hit Iowa City, a place I visit often and to which I feel deeply attached. The larger strokes of this piece mean to capture the sweeping power of the tornado, obviously, but I hope the emotional effect of the piece comes mainly from the shorter strokes above and blow, which illustrate the storm's literal fragmentation of earth and sky.

I will donate all proceeds from prints of Twist to Iowa City charities.
