Karen L. Shuman Associate Professor of Mathematics Department of Mathematics and Statistics Grinnell College Grinnell, IA 50112-1690 Contact Information: Office: 2249 Noyce Science Center Phone: (641) 269-4927 Fax: (641) 269-4984 Email: shumank@math.grinnell.edu I am an associate professor of mathematics at Grinnell College who specializes in harmonic analysis. In addition to teaching analysis-related classes, I especially enjoy teaching tutorial and advising students--both non-majors and majors--in Grinnell's open curriculum. With my collaborators Palle Jorgensen and Keri Kornelson, I study harmonic analysis of affine iterated function systems and related topics. Before coming to Grinnell, I was a VIGRE post-doc at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and I was a graduate student at Dartmouth College. Agnes Scott College is my alma mater; its math page is here. Outside mathematics, I enjoy traveling with my husband, especially in England. I also enjoy taking care of my cats, photography, reading mysteries, and cooking. We are slowing restoring our circa 1895 house in Grinnell.

RECENT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

There are several projects I'd be happy to talk to you about if you are interested in doing something during the regular school year. Early in the spring term, faculty members in the mathematics and statistics department at Grinnell present possible topics for undergraduate summer research.

• Fatemah Elahi (Grinnell College): Comparing the mathematics of church architecture: St. Stephen Walbrook (England), the Shah Mosque (Iran), and the Bahá'í Temple (Chicago) (Summer 2010)
• Cyrus Smith and Paloma Velazquez (Grinnell College): Mathematics of Christopher Wren's London churches; included a one-week trip to London, UK, for church and British Library visits; sponsored by the Dean's office (Summer 2010)
• Ernest Boateng-Abebresse, Pengjun Shen, Talent Takundwa, and Fai Tosuratana (Grinnell College): Equilibrium measures of iterated function systems with overlap (Summer 2008)
