Course Goals
Data inform the decisions that people make and help us learn about our world.
Companies, governments, organizations, scholars, and citizens of all stripes can
benefit from understanding how to collect, analyze, and interpret data. This
course is about that process.
Particular goals of the course are:
- To understand basic concepts in data production and data quality.
- To learn basic techniques for analyzing data sets, but with a conceptual emphasis on that understanding.
- To appreciate the role that data play in making decisions or in improving
our understanding of the world.
- To gain facility in communicating quantitative information.
Textbook
The course textbook is Investigating Statistical Concepts, Applications, and Methods, by Beth L. Chance and Allan J. Rossman.
