Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition, 2007

The event

The thirteenth annual Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition was held at Grinnell College on Saturday, March 10, 2007. Teams of two or three students each worked on a collection of ten problems for three hours, submitting written solutions.

Grinnell College fielded nine teams:

• The Abel Group of Three, Mark Three (Norman Perlmutter 2007, Katrina Honigs 2008, and Matt Johnson 2008)
• Barely Legal (Avram Gottschlich 2007, Chris LeBailly 2008, and Trevor Sedberry 2007)
• The Undefined (Abel Assefa Belay 2008, Nikoloz Sakvarelidze 2010, and Iliana Radneva 2009)
• Y=F(z) (Fai Tosuratana 2010, Yue Hou 2009, and Zao Li 2010)
• Squeeze (Lynn Xue 2009, Tolga Oztan 2010, and Halima Ilyas 2009)
• Grinnell (Hai Tran 2009, Mona Chughtai 2008, and Andriana Nikolova 2007)
• Brachistochrone (Kene Obi 2009, Joanna Ofori-Addo 2008, and Eric Davenport 2008)
• Triple Root (Abby Zillner 2010 and Rolf Hoyer 2008, with Gao Niu of Iowa Wesleyan College)
• HON (Mike Hu 2008, Eric Omwega 2008, and Trang Nguyen 2008)

Results

Triple Root placed second in the competition, earning 75 points; they trailed Drake University's winning team by eleven points.

HON earned 71 points and placed third.

The rest of our field also turned in very good performances:

• The Abel Group of Three, Mark Three: 65 points, fourth place.
• Barely Legal: 61 points, fifth place.
• Grinnell: 58 points, sixth place.
• The Undefined: 45 points, tied for tenth place.
• Y=F(z): 45 points, tied for tenth place.
• Brachistochrone: 45 points, tied for tenth place.
• Squeeze: 44 points, tied for thirteenth place.

All nine Grinnell teams were at or above the median score.
