This conference is intended for anyone interested in the 3x+1 problem ( also known as the Syracuse algorithm, Collatz', Kakutani's, or Ulam's problem), and related mathematics.

The LOCATION of the conference, Eichstätt, is a small but beautiful town (about 13,000 inhabitants) in the center of Bavaria, one hour north of Munich. The town is attractively situated in the Altmühl river valley. Eichstätt boasts a complete Renaissance ensemble and an internationally reputed paleontological museum containing the fossil Archeopteryx. The Katholische Universität Eichstätt continues a university tradition of more than 400 years. The university buildings are famous for their architecture combining old and new elements.



TRAIN TRAVEL FROM MUNICH: A train from Munich Airport to Eichstätt runs approximately once every hour. The first connection is at 4:26 am, the last at 9:36 pm. One-way cost is 41 DM. There is no reduction for return tickets. It is necessary to change trains twice and the total travel time is 2.5-3 hours.

ACCOMODATIONS: A block of rooms at the Hotel Schießstätte have been reserved for conference participants until March 31. Because the conference is held during the tourist season, it is recommended that accomodations are reserved early. The rate is 65 DM per night (single) and 110 DM (double). The hotel address is:
